How can Christ Shape your Families Life

Every family is different. And different things work for different situations.

At our heart we want to see Christ at the centre of all Family life.

There's many thoughts and resources that you can use below in your families life.

Moment, Milestones and Models

Family discipleship is forever changing and evolving, and can take different forms for different families. This is framework for thinking about discipling young people within the family context. The framework was based heavily on the book “Family Discipleship” by Matt Chandler and Adam Griffin.

The framework is relatively simple and aims to add a helpful way to intentionally think about how to weave faith into family life using the moments, milestones and role models within your families lives.

Moments

There are many little moments that happen throughout your day with your kids. Part of this family discipleship framework is thinking about how you can take advantage of these daily moments to communicate God’s truth, when the opportunity presents itself. It’s about weaving faith into daily life.
These moments are about being intentional in bringing Jesus into the everyday, but can also be spontaneous and unplanned. For example, praying for the emergency service vehicle driving pass, talking about God’s creation when going for a walk, or saying ‘we will pray’, rather than ‘I will pray’, teaching the communal nature of prayer.
Some of these moments can lead to deeper theological conversations e.g. Halloween life vs death; or it could be as simple as demonstrating God’s character and how to live for Christ.
The more you work on your personal faith, the more you can recognise opportunities with your family. Some of these moments can then slowly become part of your family’s discipleship pattern, building a foundation of faith that your kids can and will rely on.

Milestones

Milestones are defined as a significant stage or event in your life. We all experience different milestones, from birthdays, weddings, accomplishments, developmental stages etc.
Family discipleship milestones are events or changes so significant or profound that it is worthy of recurring reflection. The goal of milestones is to remind us of God’s place in our lives. We want to record these milestones.
Some examples of milestones are when your child starts schools, graduate from primary to high-school, making a grand final, or even a significant birthday. These are great milestones that can help ground and shape the faith of a young person. You could chose tho do something as simple as, in your child birthday card, share how you see God working in them, or how you see them practice living like Christ. Affirming the difference following Christ makes in their life helps them know the significance of Christ today.
You can also record and celebrate faith based milestones in life, e.g. baptism, first undersanding of grace.

Model

We see Christ by observing others’ lives, and knowing other Christians. You model Jesus in your kids’ lives through your actions and attitude, with the help of the Holy Spirit, because we aren’t perfect. You want to role model a priority for Church and mission in life.
But you aren’t the only role models in your child’s life. You want to think of those that can also be role models in their life. People that are in proximity to your children, across a range of ages. Studies show that children with 5+ Christian adults, outside of parents that support (not just teach) then in faith are more likely to continue to follow Jesus beyond high school.
These are people you can invite into your family milestones, have your kids spend time with. There are the kids and youth leaders your kids see each week, that you actively include in your life beyond church. Or the bible study members that see your kids each week. And you invite them to birthdays, sports, swimming, school events, or just make time for your kids to hanging out with them. This is so that they can be role models and support in their lives.
